Happy Valley has returned to our screens for its third and final series and viewers were pleased to see original cast members back on the show.

The hit BBC crime drama follows Sergeant Catherine Cawood, played by Sarah Lancashire, who leads a police team in Calderdale. There have been two series of the BBC programme with it last being on our screens in 2016.

Here is a full list of the Happy Valley cast from series one to three and what they do away from the BBC crime drama.

Sarah Lancashire as Catherine Cawood

Sarah Lancashire has played her iconic role as Catherin Cawood in Happy Valleys since series one. The award-winning actress has been a beloved staple of British TV since her role as Raquel Watts in Coronation Street in the 1990s – and her career only goes from strength to strength.

Sarah is back on our screens for the third and final instalment of the BBC hit crime drama and fans can’t get enough. Away from the show she has recently cracked America by playing celebrity chef Julia Child in HBO Max’s comedy Julia.

Siobhan Finneran as Clare Cartwright

Appeared in series one, two and three

Siobhan Sinneran is back in her role of Clare Cartwright, Catherine’s sister. The star has been on the show since it first started back in 2014.

Away from the BBC drama Siobhan has starred in a number of popular TV shows. The actress played lady’s maid Sarah O’Brien in Downton Abbey and some may forget that she starred in ITV’s hit comedy, Benidorm.

James Norton as Tommy Lee Royce

Appeared in series one, two and three

Back to cause more trouble in Happy Valley is Tommy Lee Royce who is played by James Norton. The 37-year-old actor rose to fame after roles in Grantchester, War & Peace, McMafia as well as Happy Valley.

Away from the show the actor is happily and quietly loved up with Hollywood actress Imogen Poots. The couple are notoriously private about their love life and are often only pictured together on rare occasions.

Rhys Connah as Ryan Cawood

Appeared in series one, two and three

Back playing Catherine’s grandson Ryan is Rhys Connah. BBC viewers last saw Ryan as a 10-year-old boy in 2016 and they can’t quite wrap their heads around seeing Ryan so grown up.

Away from Happy Valley Rhys has appeared in To Walk Invisible: The Bronte Sisters, which also featured the late Charlie Murphy.

He also starred in The White Princess, alongside Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer, as well as the film The Runaways where he played Ben and the short The Snow Maze, where he portrayed Tim.

Con O’Neill as Neil

Appeared in series two and three

Neil is Clare’s boyfriend and he is played by Con O’Neill. The actor has appeared on the BBC drama since series two. Last year he starred in the film The Batman and played the role of Chief Mackenzie Bock.

Steve Pemberton as Kevin Weatherill

Appeared in series one

Steve Pemberton played the role of accountant Kevin Weatherill in Sally Wainwright’s gritty BBC drama. The actor appeared in series one and didn’t return for series two or three.

The star has since had his own dark comedy drama, Inside No. 9. with writing partner Reece Shearsmith.

Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, who created the show, said that they are going to focus on new projects as Inside No 9 ends – but have teased that it might not be goodbye forever, The Mirror reports.

George Costigan as Nevison Gallagher

Appeared in series one, two and three

Local businessman Nevison Gallagher is played by George Costigan. The actor has been on the BBC show since it first started in 2014.

He is best known for playing Bob in the 1987 film Rita, Sue and Bob Too. Away from Happy Valley he has featured in episodes of New Tricks, Vera, Midsomer Murders, Line of Duty and Gentleman Jack.

Joe Armstrong as Ashley Cowgill

Appeared in series one

Ashley Cowgill, played by Joe Armstrong, who was a caravan park owner in the Calder Valley and was featured in series one of the BBC show.

The star is the son of actor Alun Armstrong and have both appeared in a number of shows together including BBC drama A Passionate Woman, in which he played the younger version of his father’s character.

Adam Long as Lewis Whippey

Appeared in series one

Lewis Whippey appeared in the first series of Happy Valley and played the role of Adam Long, who worked for Ashley Cowgill. He also starred in Spike Island, Vera, Waterloo Road, The Thirteenth Tale, and Act Of Grace. It’s unknown what the actor is up to now.

Charlie Murphy as Ann Gallagher

Appeared in series one, two and three

Charlie plays the role of Anna Gallagher, who is the daughter of Nevison. Ann was kidnapped by Tommy Lee Royce in the first series of Happy Valley.

Away from The BBC drama, Charlie has starred in the British period crime drama, Peaky Blinders between and played the role of Jessie Eden.

Karl Davies as Daniel Cawood

Appeared in series one, two and three

Son to Catherine is Daniel Cawood who is played by Karl Davies. Karl had previously starred in many shows including Emmerdale, Kingdom, Fat Friends, The Bill, Misomer Murders, Game of Thrones, The Syndicate, The Bay, The Tower, Call The Midwife and Chernobyl.

Rick Warden as Mike Taylor

Appeared in series one, two and three

Playing Inspector Mike Taylor is Rick Warden. The actor has grabbed the hearts of viewers since he joined the show when it first began in 2014.

Rick has recently appeared in new ITV drama A Spy Among Friends. He has also starred in Trigger Point, Rules of the Game and Casualty.

Amelia Bullmore as Vicky Fleming

Appeared in series two

Amelia starred in the second series of Happy Valley, playing jealous mistress Vicky Fleming. The actress has also starred in a variety of other hit TV shows from Ashes to Ashes to The Crown. Amelia rose to fame with her role as Steph Barnes in Coronation Street.

Kevin Doyle as DS John Wadsworth

Appeared in series two

Kevin played the role of DS John Wadsworth in Happy Valley in series two. The actor went on to receive two Screen Actors Guild awards and a Royal Television Society award for best actor for his performance on the BBC show.

Kevin has also starred in other iconic British programmes, including Holby City, Wild at Heart, and New Tricks.

Shirley Henderson as Frances Drummond

Appeared in series two

Shirley appeared as Frances Drummond in the second series of Happy Valley. The multi-award-winning actress is well known for playing Moaning Myrtle in Harry Potter.

As well as TV she’s starred in films including the Bridget Jones franchise as Jude. Most recently Shirely started in the Channel 5 psychological thriller, The House Across The Street, which was previously titled The Winter Child.

Robert Emms as Daryl Garrs

Appeared in series two

Robert played the role of Alison Garrs’ son Daryl in Happy Valley. In series two she killed him after he admitted to murdering three sex workers. The actor recently started in Star Wars: Andor and played the role of Lonni Jung, an ISB supervisor.

Vincent Franklin as DSI Andy Shepherd

Vincent Franklin has played the role of DSI Andy Shepherd since series two. The star has also appeared in Bodyguard, Doc Martin and Gentleman Jack.

Julie Hesmondhalgh as Amanda Wadsworth

Appeared in series two

Julie played the role of midwife Amanda Wadsworth in series two of Happy Valley. The actress is well known for her stink on Coronation Street. She left the soap in 2014 after 16 years playing Hayley Cropper.

Since then she’s taken roles in Channel 4 series Cucumber, BBC4 film Black Roses: The Killing of Sophie Lancaster and appeared on stage in Blindsided at the Royal Exchange and God Bless the Child at the Royal Court.

Katherine Kelly as DI Jodie Shackleton

Appeared in series two

Katherine starred as Catherine’s colleague Jodie Shackleton in Happy Valley. The star shot to fame after appearing on Coronation Street as Becky McDonald, who was married to the pub landlord Steve.

In 2021 the actress played the lead role in ITV’s Innocent. Last year Katherine appeared on Celebrity Bake Off. The 43-year-old is reportedly in a relationship with Line of Duty actor Tony Pitts following her marriage split two years ago. According to a report in the Mirror, they have been dating for “some time”.

Mathew Lewis as Sean Balmforth

Appeared in series two

Leeds-born actor Mathew played the role of Sean in Happy Valley series two. The star is best known for his role as Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter series.

In 2020 Matthew Lewis was back on the big screen starring in film Baby Done. He played the role of dad-to-be whose partner hastily draws up a pre-parenthood bucket list upon learning the couple are expecting. Lewis has also starred in Channel 5 television series All Creatures Great and Small.

Susan Lynch as Alison Garrs

Appeared in series two and three

Alison, who is played by Susan Lynch, had a big role in the second series of Happy Valley where she saved her son from a life in prison by shooting him dead. The star has returned to our screens for the third and final series.

Derek Riddell as Richard Cawood

Appeared in series one, two and three

Richard Cawood is Catherine’s ex-husband and he is played by Derek Riddell. Away from the show the star is best known as Dr Jamie Patterson in No Angels and has also starred in Doctor Who, Waterloo Road and Shetland.

Amit Shah as Faisal Bhatti

Appeared in series three

Amit’s character is one of the new faces who joined Happy Valley season 3. He is a pharmacist in the Valley who appears to be caught up in a mess of his own. Amit has starred in The Long Call and The Witcher.

Mollie Winnard as Joanna Hepworth

Appeared in series three

Joanna is playing the role of Rob’s wife and mother to their two young daughters. The actress made her TV debut playing the role of Zoe in Love, Lies and Records in 2017.

She later landed the role of Kayla Clifton in ITV hit soap Coronation Street. She has also appeared in the remake of All Creatures Great and Small as Maggie, and played grieving Demi in the heartbreaking BBC drama Four Lives.

Mark Stanley as Rob Hepworth

Appeared in series three

Rob Is a new character in the BBC crime series. He is Ryan’s football coach who appears to have an angry streak. He is father to two young daughters and is the husband of Joanna.

The actor is well known for his roles as Grenn in the HBO series Game of Thrones. Last year he appeared in ITV’s Trigger Point, he played the role of DI Thom Youngblood.

Mark also recently appeared in ITV true crime drama The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe and TV crime drama The Bay, BBC thriller The Girl Before and Netflix’s Criminal: UK.
