The Incident

Safa was staying with her grandmother while recovering from a sickness bug, as her mother was at work. During this time, her grandmother suffered a stroke.

Thanks to her training, Safa recognized the symptoms and understood the urgency of acting within the “golden hour” to maximize her grandmother’s chances of survival. She immediately called emergency services, communicated the situation clearly, and followed their instructions without panic.

Safa’s calm demeanor and precise actions played a crucial role in ensuring her grandmother received timely medical attention.

Recognition for Bravery

Brogan Thornton, Year 4 teacher at Low Ash Primary, commended Safa for her exceptional response.

“Safa acted with courage and bravery in what was a very serious situation. Her fast thinking and remembering what she had learnt at school meant she was able to save her grandma’s life,” she said.

Thornton also acknowledged the importance of Helen Matthews’ dedication to teaching first aid.

“If it wasn’t for Helen’s enthusiasm and high standards in teaching, this outcome may not have been possible,” she added.

Honored by the Lord Mayor

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Bev Mullaney, presented certificates of appreciation to both Safa and Helen, praising their contributions.

“It is great to recognise the bravery of Safa and the excellent teaching given to her, allowing her to take action to help save her grandma,” the Lord Mayor said.
