Former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg is due to be sentenced for domestic abuse against his estranged wife, Gillian Hogg. The abuse occurred over five years, between 2019 and 2024.
Hogg pleaded guilty on November 4 in Selkirk Sheriff Court to shouting and swearing at his wife, tracking her movements, and sending alarming and distressing messages. The incidents took place in various locations, including Hawick in the Scottish Borders.
The court heard that Hogg’s behavior “deteriorated” after the couple moved to Exeter in 2019. He would go out partying and then criticize his wife for “not being fun.” The court also learned that Hogg used an app to track Gillian Hogg’s location and bombarded her with text messages, at one point sending “in excess of 200 texts in a few hours despite being asked to leave her alone,” according to a report by The Independent.

Hogg, 32, who now plays for French club Montpellier and lives abroad, is in the process of a divorce. He retired from professional rugby in July 2023 but returned to the sport after signing a two-year contract with Montpellier.
This sentencing follows a previous court appearance on December 5 in Jedburgh Sheriff Court, where Hogg received a five-year non-harassment order and a £600 fine for breaching bail conditions by repeatedly contacting Gillian Hogg, according to The Independent report.
The sentencing for the domestic abuse charge was deferred until January 9 to clarify whether a community order with remotely monitored supervision could be imposed due to Hogg living abroad.
