Imam Who Helped Establish Derby’s First Mosque Dies

Qari Ismaeel Khandia, a founding figure in Derby’s Muslim community and one of the city’s first spiritual leaders, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, leadership, and unity.

Khandia was instrumental in establishing Derby’s first mosque, located in a modest terraced house on Dairyhouse Road in the 1960s.

This initiative marked the start of a journey that shaped the city’s growing Muslim community. He later became the first Imam of the Dairyhouse Road Mosque, earning respect for his knowledge and service, The BBC reported.

As the community expanded, Khandia played a central role in the development of Derby Jamia Mosque on Rose Hill Street, which has since become a cornerstone for worship and learning.

Reflecting on his contributions, Nazir Hussain, chairman of Derby Jamia Mosque, described him as “a pivotal person and a pivotal leader in the community.”

“Being an Imam, the people must trust you. He gained so much trust because of his personal characteristics and his Islamic knowledge,” Hussain said.

“The mosque on Dairyhouse Road was initially the only one in the city, so he was very active in the community, leading and helping with all the prayers.”

Khandia’s influence extended beyond spiritual leadership. He was deeply involved in guiding the community during the establishment of four mosques in Derby, including the Village Street Mosque and the Porter Road Mosque.

Hussain noted Khandia’s efforts in acquiring land and offering advice were crucial in these developments.

“He was a very sincere person and he was here during a time where there were elements of disunity, and he brought the community together,” Mr. Hussain said.

“Because of his humble nature and the respect in the community, people would look up to him and listen to what he had to say.”

His funeral, or Janazah, took place on Monday evening at Derby Jamia Mosque, where community members gathered to pay their final respects.

In a tribute shared on Facebook, Derby Jamia Mosque praised Khandia’s pivotal role in establishing four local masjids. The post acknowledged his dedication to fostering unity and guidance for both religious and personal matters.

“People would go to him for both religious and personal guidance,” Hussain added. “He was a very nice, humble person, and his leadership was instrumental during challenging times for our community.”

As the city mourns his loss, Khandia’s enduring impact as a unifying force and spiritual guide will be remembered by many. His legacy continues in the institutions he helped build and the lives he touched.
