Indian-origin Anita Anand drops out of Canadian Prime Minister race, says ‘will not seek re-election’

Indian-origin Anita Ananad on Saturday left the Canadian Prime Minister race as she announced that she will not seek the leadership of the Liberal Party.
After Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday, the post for the PM left vacant. Several leaders including Anita Anand were considered as the strong candidate for the race.
Announcing her decision, the transport minister said, “Since 2019, I have been deeply honoured and humbled to serve as Oakville’s Member of Parliament and as member of Cabinet. In these roles, I have given all I have to keep Canada safe, strong, and free. I entered public life because I wanted to make a meaningful contribution to my community and country, a goal instilled in me by my parents, who immigrated to Canada before I was born.”

She further stated that being the minister has been the challenging part of her life but also tremendously fulfilling to deliver results for Canadians by working collaboratively.
“Today I am announcing that I will not be entering the race to become the next Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and will not be seeking re-election as the Member of Parliament for Oakville. I will continue to honourably execute my roles as a public office holder until the next election,” she added.
Anita Anand also said that now that the Prime Minister has made his decision to move to his next chapter she is determined to return to her prior professional life of teaching, research and public policy analyses.
She thanked Trudeau, people of Oakville, fellow caucus members and Canadians.
Anand is the latest federal cabinet minister to bow out of the upcoming race to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
