J.Crew Hires Ex-Skims Exec Julia Collier as CMO
Julia Collier is the new chief marketing officer for J.Crew, the brand’s parent company, J.Crew Group, announced today.
Collier joins from Skims, where she was most recently senior vice president of marketing. She spent more than four years at the Kim Kardashian-owned company, which she joined ahead of its launch in 2019.
The hire comes after nearly a year without a top marketer for J.Crew and sister brand Madewell, also owned by J.Crew Group. Derek Yarbrough, former executive vice president and CMO of both J.Crew and Madewell, left in January. Collier will only lead J.Crew’s marketing, and the company declined to say what the hire means for Madewell’s leadership.
Collier will start Jan. 6 and report directly to Libby Wadle, chief executive officer of J.Crew Group. Her role will oversee J.Crew’s brand marketing and creative.
Collier, “brings an ideal combination of brand-building expertise, fashion industry knowledge, and passion for culturally-relevant marketing strategies that will drive even greater engagement,” Wadle said in a statement. “Her versatile background, proven leadership capabilities, and forward-thinking approach will be a valuable addition to our team as we continue to build on our momentum.”
Bringing back J.Crew’s momentum
For the last four years, J.Crew has been working to regain its footing after becoming one of the first retail casualties of the Covid-19 pandemic when J.Crew Group owner Chinos Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2020. Yarbrough was part of a new executive slate put in place in 2021 to chart a path forward for the apparel company.
Collier’s background includes two decades of fashion, brand, and marketing agency experience. At Skims, she inked partnership deals across sports and luxury, including with the NBA, WNBA, Team USA, Fendi, Swarovski, and Dolce & Gabbana. Before that, she led marketing at fashion brand A.L.C. and spent four years at Wednesday Agency. Earlier in her career, she worked on brands like Rugby Ralph Lauren and Diesel.
