Oldham Runners Complete Year-Long Challenge for Gaza Relief

Driven by solidarity with the people of Gaza, two Oldham runners, Afruz Miah and Monwar Hussain, are nearing the end of their extraordinary year-long challenge: running 10km daily to raise funds and awareness for Gaza’s plight.

Their campaign, “Miles4Humanity,” has so far raised £120,000, with a final target of £150,000, Asian Image reported.

Their final run will take place on December 31 at Alexandra Park at 12 pm. The duo hopes the event will not only celebrate their achievement but also continue to shed light on Gaza’s resilience amid unimaginable hardship.

For Afruz, 51, and Monwar, 40, the plight of Gazans was the driving force behind their 3,620km journey.

“The conditions in Gaza are heartbreaking—parents pulling loved ones from rubble, children growing up in war zones,” Afruz said.

“This challenge was about standing in solidarity with them and raising awareness for their suffering.”

Monwar echoed this sentiment. “Every single stride has been a reminder of Gaza’s resilience. The people there endure so much, yet they continue to fight for survival and dignity. I wanted to use my privilege to amplify their voices and make a difference,” he said.

Despite warnings from experts that the challenge was impossible, the duo relied on faith, community support, and determination to see it through. Afruz credited their success to “the blessing of God” and the prayers of supporters worldwide.

Both runners reflected on the personal and collective impact of the journey. “It’s not just about logging miles; it’s about saving lives and raising awareness,” Monwar said.

“This crisis has gone on far too long, and we wanted to stand with those who just want to live normal lives.”

Afruz, nicknamed “The Running Man” for his endurance feats, such as running from Oldham to London during Ramadan, joined Monwar in this challenge to push through his own limits. “The cause kept me going,” Afruz said. “Seeing Monwar return every day, even after marathons, inspired me to break through mental barriers.”

Their efforts have sparked inspiration worldwide, with Afruz hoping their journey becomes a legacy for future generations.

“This challenge was a reminder of what faith, determination, and a united cause can achieve,” he said.

The pair are hosting an evening event on February 1 to build on their momentum and reach their fundraising goal. For Monwar, who has completed the Manchester Marathon and plans to run the London Marathon next, the focus remains on making a lasting impact for Gaza.

“This isn’t the end—it’s just the beginning,” Monwar said. “I hope our journey inspires others to take action and support those in need.”

Their final run is a call to stand in solidarity with Gaza and all those enduring hardship worldwide.
